  • Have we made the Great Commission more complicated for people than God intended?

At least 80% of the world's population are oral learners, either by necessity or preference, but an estimated 90% of the world’s Christian workers present the gospel using written styles. A significant number of adults have “below basic” or “basic” literacy skills even in developed nations claiming literacy rate of over 95%. These statistics emphasize the crucial need for reaching oral preference learners.

To spread the Good News to the ends of the world, we need to adopt methods that effectively reach every person regardless of their literacy and learning preference.

Storying is one such effective technique. Telling stories engages people at an emotional level, making them respond best to the information conveyed. Through storying, people can enter a story, identify with the characters and enables them to engage with the message at a heart level.

To minister effectively, we need to understand the concepts and principles of orality. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
    ·        Understand the relevance of orality and storying in spreading the message of God.
    ·        Describe the steps on how to tell a story and present Bible stories.
    ·        Tell one Bible story from memory and integrate pre- and post-story dialogues and questions to facilitate learning.

  • As Christians we sometimes think that grieving is “wrong and not very spiritual”. But what does the Bible have to say about sadness or grief, and how do you help someone who is grieving? Or maybe that someone is you?

Grief is a universal experience: We’ve all experienced it. And that experience of losing something or someone we really care about is really hard. Some of us have experienced significant grief and loss in the past, and may still be working through it.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

    ·        Explain that grieving should not be outlawed or restricted.

    ·        Gain insights into a grieving person and learn how to comfort them.

    ·        Understand how you can walk through grief and loss.

Without a strong understanding of Biblical suffering, we can feel overwhelmed and unable to deal with the pain, especially when we are called to serve people who suffer. This course by Interserve will help you to have a healthier understanding of suffering, why it exists, and how it should be approached.

Based on her life work, Tonica van der Meer, a co-editor of the book 'Sorrow and Blood', this course will help us reflect on what the Bible has to say about the topic. You will be able to identify different types of suffering, its impact, and sources. Through the examples of Paul and Jesus and modern examples around us, you will be able to understand and introspect the biblical purpose of suffering.

  • We may be very experienced with mentoring and discipleship in our home cultures, but does this directly translate to a different culture? This course by Charles Davis, former director of TEAM, provides a framework for missional disciple making across diverse cultural contexts. He shows how we can recalibrate our ministry efforts, like adjusting sound levels on a mixer board, to accommodate different cultural assumptions.

Through this course, you and your ministry team will be able to engage in discussion, evaluate various cultural patterns with humility and develop methods appropriate to the unique culture in which you are seeking to make disciples. It will help make you aware of your own assumptions about discipleship, and compare it to Biblical truths as applied to the local context.

Here we only look at 3 primary missional principles contained in the book 'Making Disciples Across Cultures: Missional Principles for a Diverse World'. In the book Davis outlines 10 principles for making disciples. Each principle has within it a set of slider switches that must be set in dynamic tension. Do consider reading the book for a more thorough examination of this topic.

  • Cross-cultural workers during their first year experience a tremendous amount of change. These include food, culture, language, beliefs, traffic, security, and many more, which are often different from their expectations and can be quite overwhelming. This course by Link Care talks about strategies that will help you deal with common issues that arise during the first year of living overseas and help you avoid becoming overwhelmed or burnt out.

This course identifies nine common “milestones” that people typically face, and helps you work through these adjustments by:

    ·        Reflecting on the current situation

    ·        Remembering similar situations in the past

    ·        Considering practical steps to move forward

You can choose only to go through those milestones most relevant to you. However, others might be helpful to work through, because you may need to help others on your team work through them, as they strive to thrive during their first year as well!
